Man killed in early-morning crash on I-93 north in Windham

The crash near Exit 3 closed the left three lanes during the Thursday morning commute and backed traffic up toward the Massachusetts line.

WINDHAM, N.H. — A man died after a crash on Interstate 93 north in Windham early Thursday that shut down most of the highway's northbound lanes near Exit 3 during the morning commute.

The Windham Fire Department said it got a 911 call about a car fire on the highway at about 6 a.m. While crews were on the way, the call was updated to a crash with an unconscious person inside, NBC Boston reported.

Windham police got there first and found one heavily damaged vehicle stopped in the center lane with the driver still inside, according to the fire department. Medical crews found the man unconscious and in traumatic arrest. He was taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry, where he died.

His name has not been released.

State police, with help from Salem police, closed the left three lanes near Exit 3, leaving traffic to squeeze through the right and breakdown lanes, The Eagle-Tribune reported. The backup stretched south on I-93 and onto Route 111 and nearby local roads.

Firefighters from Windham and Salem also responded. All lanes have since reopened, the Pulse of NH reported.

Authorities have not said what caused the crash.
