Joe Manchin campaigns with Susan Collins at New Balance factory in Norway

The former West Virginia senator, a longtime Senate ally, told shoe workers that Maine and the country need Collins back in Washington.

NORWAY, Maine — Former U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia joined Republican Sen. Susan Collins on the campaign trail in western Maine, touring the New Balance shoe factory in Norway and telling workers that Maine and the country need her in Washington, WGME reported.

Manchin, who had already endorsed Collins in her bid for reelection, heaped praise on his former colleague in remarks to factory employees. "You have a gem. You have a national treasure," he said, according to the station.

The two served together in the Senate for more than 14 years under three presidents, and each built a reputation as a swing vote willing to cross party lines, WGME reported. Manchin told the workers that from his first day in Washington, Collins was a colleague who put the country ahead of party and put Maine ahead of everything else.

Collins said the partnership shows her record of bringing both parties together on bipartisan deals. She said she is more likely than any other sitting senator to oppose her own party, backing policies when she thinks they are right and opposing them when she thinks they are wrong, and that she is proud of making independent decisions no matter who is in the White House, the station reported. Manchin called her the most bipartisan senator in Washington, and Collins agreed.

The factory stop echoed the start of her campaign. Collins announced her run for a sixth term in February with a short video in which she unboxed a pair of New Balance sneakers.

Collins faces Democrat Troy Jackson, a former Maine Senate president, in the Nov. 3 election. Jackson secured the Democratic nomination in July after Graham Platner, who won the June primary, left the race following a sexual assault allegation, The Associated Press reported.

Democrats see Maine as their best chance to flip a Senate seat this year, according to the AP, as they try to overturn Republicans' 53-47 majority.
