Father of Sandra Birchmore's unborn child testifies he urged her to report Farwell

Jason Pickard, an Army Reserve sergeant who testified under an immunity agreement, told jurors Birchmore said her relationship with the former Stoughton officer began when she was a minor.

BOSTON — The man DNA testing identified as the father of Sandra Birchmore's unborn child told jurors Thursday that he urged her to report former Stoughton police officer Matthew Farwell, but she refused.

Jason Pickard, a master sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve who once worked as a military recruiter in Quincy, testified in Farwell's federal murder trial under an immunity agreement with prosecutors. Before he took the stand, Chief U.S. District Judge Denise Casper told jurors to weigh his testimony with particular caution, The Boston Globe reported.

Farwell is accused of strangling Birchmore, 23, in her Canton apartment on Feb. 1, 2021, and staging her death to look like a suicide. Prosecutors say he began sexually abusing her when she was a teenager in the Stoughton police youth Explorers program. He has pleaded not guilty to killing Birchmore and her unborn child.

'I was concerned that it could be my child'

Pickard testified that Birchmore told him her relationship with Farwell started when she was a minor, and that he encouraged her to go to authorities, CBS Boston reported. He acknowledged he did not report it himself. He said he was at first reluctant to talk with federal investigators because adultery and a relationship with a recruit violate military rules, according to the Globe.

When Birchmore learned she was pregnant, she told Pickard that Farwell was the father. Pickard said he had doubts, but she assured him by text that the baby was not his, according to the Globe. Both Birchmore and Farwell believed Farwell was the father; DNA testing later showed it was Pickard.

Pickard said that in January 2021, Birchmore described arguments with Farwell over child support and whether he would sign the birth certificate. Late that month, she told Pickard that Farwell had become more supportive of the pregnancy.

Pickard also said he had never met Farwell before Thursday, NBC Boston reported. On cross-examination, Farwell's lawyers questioned him about his relationship with Birchmore and their text messages.

Three women who said they had sexual relationships with Farwell while he was dating or married to his wife also testified Thursday, according to CBS Boston.

Colleagues noticed a change

On Wednesday, jurors heard from eight witnesses, NBC 10 reported. Two Stoughton detectives who considered themselves close friends of Farwell said he seemed agitated and distracted in December 2020 and January 2021, texting constantly and stepping out for phone calls. One said Farwell told her he was having trouble with a woman other than his wife but expected the problem to resolve itself.

Birchmore's hairstylist and a college friend testified that Birchmore had talked about Farwell and her pregnancy, and that both went to authorities after her death. A childhood friend testified that on the day Birchmore died, she asked for help shoveling out her car ahead of a winter storm.

Farwell's defense has pointed to Birchmore's financial struggles and a past suicide attempt, Boston 25 News reported.

Federal prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty.
