Collins accuses Schumer of running false attack ads in tight Maine Senate race
The Republican senator said she has never seen a campaign like it, and a new Fox News poll shows her tied with Democrat Troy Jackson days before the election.
AUGUSTA, Maine — U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and national Democrats of flooding her reelection race with false attack ads, telling Fox News on Sunday that she had never seen a campaign with "so many outright lies."
Collins, a Republican, faces Democrat Troy Jackson in Tuesday's election. The latest Fox News poll shows the race tied, with each candidate at 49%.
Collins said one of the ads she considers completely false concerns Jeffrey Epstein, according to Fox News. The report did not describe what that ad claims.
She also said two Senate colleagues in close races have faced ads nearly identical to the ones run against her, which she described as part of Schumer's playbook. She did not name the colleagues.
Collins accused Jackson, Schumer and their allies of trying to nationalize the race and pull attention away from Maine issues. She cast herself as a bipartisan lawmaker and said the Senate needs more centrists willing to work with the other party.
She also disputed a figure used against her that says she votes with President Donald Trump 95% of the time. Collins told Fox News that number is based on only about 30% of Senate votes, and that a broader sample covering about 90% of votes puts her support for the president's position at about 72%. She said she has voted against the president's policies 138 times. The Signal has not independently verified those figures.
Collins said she is optimistic about her chances, pointing to the response she has gotten while campaigning across the state.
Jackson previously told Fox News he has a good shot at defeating Collins. The Fox News report did not include a response from Schumer or the Jackson campaign to Collins' claims about the ads.
