Maura Healey wins second term as Massachusetts governor, defeating Mike Minogue
The Associated Press called the race for the Democrat moments after polls closed. Her Republican opponent, a former medical device executive, had put millions of his own money into the campaign.
BOSTON — Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey won reelection Tuesday, defeating Republican Mike Minogue to win a second term, according to The Associated Press, which declared Healey the winner at 8:01 p.m.
Minogue is a former healthcare executive who put nearly $20 million of his own money into his campaign, The Boston Globe reported. He is an Army veteran and former CEO of the medical device maker Abiomed, according to MultiState. Independent Andrea James was also on the ballot.
During the campaign, Minogue tried to cast Healey's first term as a failure and blamed her for the high cost of living in Massachusetts, the Globe reported.
Healey became the first woman and the first openly gay person elected governor of Massachusetts in 2022, CNN reported. This year she won endorsements from several police unions that had declined to back her in her first race, according to CNN.
She defeated Republican Geoff Diehl, 64% to 35%, in 2022, according to Ballotpedia. Before becoming governor, she served two terms as the state's attorney general.
The Associated Press also called the state's U.S. Senate race for Democratic Sen. Ed Markey on Tuesday night.
