Pickup rear-ends car on Route 302 in Orange after traffic stops near school

A New Hampshire man driving a pickup could not stop in time when traffic halted ahead of him in Orange, Vermont State Police said. The other driver reported possible minor injuries.

ORANGE, Vt. — A Haverhill, New Hampshire, man crashed his pickup into the back of a car on Route 302 in Orange on Monday morning after traffic stopped ahead of him near the Orange Center School, according to Vermont State Police.

Nicholas Deblois, 26, was driving east in a 2019 Ford F-150 at about 7:09 a.m. when he came around a curve near Richardson Road and found traffic stopped in front of him, police said. He braked but could not stop in time and hit the back of a 2024 Nissan Kicks driven by Michelle Downing, 49, of Orange, according to police.

Downing reported possible minor injuries, and Deblois reported none, police said. Police said Deblois was not wearing a seat belt; Downing was.

Both drivers moved to the side of the road so traffic could keep moving. The Nissan had major damage to its rear and was towed, while the Ford, with minor front-end damage, was driven away, police said. The road was cleared and traffic returned to normal.

The Barre Town Fire Department also responded to the crash.
