Bronx man sentenced to six months in prison for West Haven mail theft
Tulio Nunez, 25, pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a 2023 theft from a postal collection box in West Haven, during which prosecutors said he backed his car into a police vehicle while trying to get away.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A Bronx, New York, man was sentenced in federal court in New Haven to six months in prison for his role in stealing mail from a postal collection box in West Haven, the U.S. attorney's office for the District of Connecticut said.
Tulio Nunez, 25, was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall to serve two years of supervised release, prosecutors said.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Nunez drove to Campbell Avenue in West Haven on Oct. 2, 2023, and parked in front of a postal collection box. An associate got out of the car, opened the box's service door with a counterfeit postal arrow key, pulled out a basket full of mail and put it on the car's passenger seat, prosecutors said.
Officers who had been watching the collection box then closed in on the car. Nunez tried to get away by backing up and hit a police car, but he and his associates were arrested and charged with state offenses, according to the U.S. attorney's office.
Nunez pleaded guilty April 27 to conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States, possession of a key adopted by the post office and theft of mail, prosecutors said.
He has been free on a $10,000 bond and is required to report to prison Jan. 12, the office said.
