Vermont to test Blue Alert system with statewide exercise Nov. 5

Subscribers to the state's VT-Alert service, highway message boards, Vermont Lottery signs and TV and radio stations will carry test messages during an hourlong drill. Wireless emergency alerts will not go to phones.

MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Department of Public Safety will run a statewide test of Vermont's Blue Alert system on Nov. 5 between 2 and 3 p.m., the Vermont State Police said Tuesday.

The exercise is meant to check that the system's parts are working, according to the department. During the test, the VT-Alert system will send messages to its thousands of subscribers, Vermont Agency of Transportation highway message boards will display exercise information, and Vermont Lottery will put messages on its signs, tickets and kiosks.

The Emergency Alert System will also be used to send test messages to TV and radio stations, the department said.

As in past exercises, the Wireless Emergency Alert system will not be used. That means phone alerts will go only to people who have signed up for VT-Alert, the department said.

People who want to receive AMBER Alerts and Blue Alerts, including updated information at the time of an alert, can register for a free account on the state's VT-Alert website, according to the department.
