Burlington driver seriously hurt after hitting parked tanker truck at earlier I-89 crash in Brookfield

Vermont State Police said a 28-year-old Burlington driver struck a tanker truck that had been parked with its emergency lights on to close a lane of Interstate 89 for an earlier crash. One of two dogs in the car was also seriously hurt.

BROOKFIELD, Vt. — A 28-year-old Burlington driver was seriously injured after crashing into a tanker truck that was blocking a lane of Interstate 89 for an earlier crash in Brookfield, Vermont State Police said Wednesday.

Police, the Brookfield Fire Department and White River Valley Ambulance were called at about 12:38 p.m. on Oct. 27 to a two-vehicle crash on the northbound side of the interstate, police said. While emergency crews were working at that scene and traffic was down to one lane, a second crash happened.

According to police, a 2024 Toyota Prius heading north hit a Brookfield tanker truck, a 2012 Freightliner M2, that was parked with its emergency lights on to close the right lane for the first crash. Both vehicles were destroyed, police said.

The driver of the Prius was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver had two dogs in the car, police said; both were taken to the Country Animal Hospital, and one was seriously hurt.

The 52-year-old Brookfield man or woman driving the tanker truck was not hurt, police said. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Police did not release either driver's name.

Police said the road was dry and the weather clear at the time. The crash is under investigation, and police listed a civil violation complaint as pending.
