Stockbridge man, 82, hurt after SUV swerves to avoid another pedestrian
Vermont State Police said the driver swerved to avoid a woman who stepped into the road on Laury Road and struck William Taggart, who suffered minor injuries. No charges have been filed.
STOCKBRIDGE, Vt. — An 82-year-old Stockbridge man suffered minor injuries Friday morning when an SUV swerving to avoid another pedestrian struck him on Laury Road, Vermont State Police said.
Police said they received a report shortly after 9 a.m. of a pedestrian struck near Meadow Lane. Troopers from the Royalton barracks and White River Valley Ambulance responded.
According to police, Mikayla Perkins, 31, of Stockbridge, was driving a 2019 GMC Acadia around a blind curve when she came up behind two people walking in the same direction she was traveling, one on each side of the road. The man who was hurt, William Taggart, was on the same side of the road as Perkins.
The other pedestrian, a woman, stepped into the middle of the road, and Perkins swerved right to avoid her, striking Taggart, police said.
Taggart was not seriously hurt and was taken to Gifford Medical Center, police said. Perkins was not injured.
Police said there was no evidence that Perkins was speeding, noting that the SUV had minimal damage. She was screened for drug and alcohol impairment and was found not to be impaired, and police said she cooperated with troopers.
No criminal charges are pending and no civil violations have been issued, according to police. The weather was clear and the road was dry at the time, police said.
