Brookfield man cited after Randolph crash with road sign, Vermont State Police say

State police said a 26-year-old driver hit a sign in the median on Route 66 near Interstate 89 and drove off with it stuck under his pickup. He was cited on charges of DUI refusal and negligent operation.

A Brookfield, Vt., man was cited on drunken-driving and negligent operation charges after his pickup truck struck a road sign in Randolph, Vermont State Police said.

Troopers were called about 8:44 p.m. Sept. 11 after someone reported a Toyota Tacoma on Judd Drive with a state transportation sign stuck underneath it, according to a release from the state police barracks in Royalton.

Investigators determined that the driver, Kolby Carpenter, 26, hit a sign in the median barrier on Route 66 between the Interstate 89 Exit 4 on- and off-ramps and kept driving to Judd Drive, where he stopped and tried to pull the sign free, police said. Troopers concluded he had been driving under the influence, the release said.

The truck, a 2023 model, was damaged in the front end. No one was hurt, police said. The weather was clear and the road was dry.

Carpenter was arrested and driven to the Royalton barracks, then released with a citation on charges of DUI refusal and negligent operation, according to the state police. He is scheduled to appear Sept. 30 in Vermont Superior Court, criminal division, in Orange County.

The charges are allegations. Carpenter has not been convicted and is presumed innocent.
