Vermont legal community raises $20,033 in 10th food and diaper drive

Law firms, state offices and legal groups also donated more than 2,900 diapers and 1,100 other items for food shelves and meal sites partnered with the Vermont Foodbank, organizers said.

Lawyers, paralegals and other legal professionals across Vermont raised $20,033 during a two-week food and diaper drive, which the Vermont Foodbank says will supply more than $192,316 worth of food, organizers said Friday.

Participants also donated more than 2,900 diapers and more than 1,100 other items. The goods went to local food shelves and meal sites that partner with the Vermont Foodbank, according to a joint statement from Attorney General Charity Clark, the Vermont Bar Association, the Vermont Paralegal Organization and the Foodbank.

The drive, called Vermont Legal Community Fighting Hunger, has run each September during Hunger Action Month since 2017. Over its 10-year history, the legal community has raised more than $119,000 and collected more than 18,600 items, the organizers said.

"Food insecurity affects Vermonters in every corner of our state," Clark said.

John Sayles, chief executive of the Vermont Foodbank, said partnerships like the drive "make a real difference in local food shelves and meal sites."

Participants included nine private law firms, the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation, the attorney general's office, the bar association and the paralegal organization. Organizers said the groups that collect the most items and money in each participating category will be recognized at the bar association's annual meeting.
