Richford driver suspected of DUI after pickup hits parked SUV in Sheldon, injuring two

Two people inside a parked Toyota RAV4 were hurt when a pickup failed to make a sharp curve and struck it early Oct. 11, Vermont State Police said.

A 22-year-old Richford man was processed on suspicion of driving under the influence after his pickup truck failed to make a sharp curve in Sheldon and struck an SUV parked on the shoulder, injuring two people inside it, Vermont State Police said Monday.

The crash happened at 12:24 a.m. on Oct. 11 on Shawville Road near Heather Lane, police said.

According to state police, Caleb Chates was driving a 2020 Ford F-150 east on Shawville Road when he failed to make a sharp corner and hit a 2025 Toyota RAV4 parked on the shoulder. Both vehicles had heavy front-end damage.

The two people inside the RAV4 had moderate injuries and were taken by ambulance to Northwestern Medical Center, police said. Chates, who police said was not wearing a seat belt, had minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital, where he was processed on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Everyone involved was later released from the hospital, police said.

Police did not say whether Chates has been charged. Suspicion of impaired driving is an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Roads were dry and the weather was clear at the time, according to police.
