MBTA and Keolis to hold rail safety events across Commuter Rail system
The transit agency and its Commuter Rail operator are staging outreach at stations, crossings and community events through Sept. 27 as part of the national See Tracks? Think Train campaign.
The MBTA and Keolis Commuter Services, the agency's operations and maintenance partner for Commuter Rail, said Monday they will hold rail safety events and run safety messaging at stations, railroad crossings and aboard trains through Sept. 27.
The push marks See Tracks? Think Train Week, organized nationally by Operation Lifesaver Inc., which focuses on safe choices by drivers and pedestrians near tracks and trains, the MBTA said.
Planned events include an information table at South Station on Sept. 21 and another at North Station on Sept. 24, participation in Barnstable Community Safety Day on Sept. 22, crossing safety outreach in Framingham and Concord on Sept. 23, and outreach at the Brandeis/Roberts and East Taunton stations on Sept. 25, according to the agency. Activities are set for the Franklin Children's Museum on Sept. 26, and outreach aimed at preventing trespassing on the tracks is planned along the Grand Junction Running Track near MIT in Cambridge on Sept. 27.
Safety messages will also run on digital screens at major stations, and the MBTA's Operation Lifesaver coach, painted with rail safety messages, will travel through stations and communities on the system, the agency said.
MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng said no one should walk along or cross tracks at unauthorized places, adding that trains can approach from either direction and that distances can be deceiving at high speeds.
Keolis General Manager and CEO John Killeen said the company is partnering with Operation Lifesaver and Samaritans on the effort.
