EPA adds monthly office hours for questions on Housatonic River cleanup

The Environmental Protection Agency said Berkshire County residents can meet with staff working on the GE-Pittsfield/Housatonic River cleanup at town and city halls this fall, with winter sessions moving online.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Friday it is adding monthly office hours where Berkshire County residents can ask questions about cleanup work at the GE-Pittsfield/Housatonic River Site in Western Massachusetts.

The agency said community members can drop in to speak with members of the cleanup team at a series of sessions beginning Sept. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lee Town Hall. Two more in-person sessions are scheduled at Pittsfield City Hall on Oct. 6 from noon to 2 p.m., and at Lenox Town Hall on Nov. 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Because of winter weather, the EPA said the December, January and February sessions will be held online. Those are set for Dec. 15 from 1 to 3 p.m., Jan. 14, 2027, from 1 to 3 p.m., and Feb. 10, 2027, from 2 to 4 p.m. Links and additional information about the site are posted on the agency's website.

Residents can also contact the agency's community involvement coordinator for the site, Olivia Lopez, at any time, the EPA said.

The Housatonic River site covers contamination tied to the former General Electric plant in Pittsfield and stretches of the river downstream.
