Three-vehicle crash on U.S. 7 in Rutland Town injures two, Vermont State Police say
Troopers said an 85-year-old West Rutland driver was following too closely when his pickup struck a truck stopped at a light on U.S. Route 7, setting off a chain-reaction collision. A civil violation complaint is pending.
Two drivers suffered minor injuries in a three-vehicle chain-reaction crash on U.S. Route 7 in Rutland Town, Vt., the Vermont State Police said in a news release issued Wednesday.
Troopers from the state police barracks in Rutland were notified of the crash near Holiday Drive at about 3:34 p.m. Aug. 18, according to the release. The weather was clear and sunny and the road was dry, police said.
All three vehicles were traveling south on Route 7, state police said. Two of them — a 2024 RAM 1500 driven by Laurence Brewster, 71, of Clarendon, Vt., and a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Robert Eddy, 64, of West Rutland, Vt. — were stopped at the traffic light at Route 7 and Holiday Drive, according to the release.
Through their investigation, troopers determined that the driver of a 2018 Ford F-150, John Foley Sr., 85, of West Rutland, was following too closely and struck the RAM, which was then pushed into the Grand Caravan, state police said.
Foley and Eddy sustained minor injuries and were taken to Rutland Regional Medical Center, according to the release. Brewster reported no injuries. All three drivers were wearing seat belts, police said.
Damage to the Ford was significant, while the other two vehicles sustained minor damage, according to the state police.
The release said a Vermont civil violation complaint is pending. No determination of responsibility has been made, and the account of the crash is the state police's.
