Amo visits Roger Williams shellfish farm and Hinckley Yachts yard on blue economy tour

The Rhode Island congressman toured a university aquaculture operation in Bristol and the Hinckley Yachts facility in Portsmouth, saying he would take what he learned back to Washington.

BRISTOL, R.I. — U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, D-R.I., toured Roger Williams University's shellfish farm and research facilities and Hinckley Yachts' Portsmouth facility Tuesday as part of what his office calls his 2026 Blue Economy Tour.

At Roger Williams, Amo toured the shellfish farm, hatchery and research labs with faculty and researchers, his office said. They discussed shellfish production, aquaculture and what the office called "blue biotechnology," along with preparing students for careers in maritime industries and federal policies on aquaculture, fisheries and environmental conservation.

At the Hinckley Yachts yard in Portsmouth, which Amo's office described as newly expanded, he met with workers and discussed skilled trades and maritime jobs, the office said.

"At Roger Williams, researchers are advancing aquaculture and blue biotech. At Hinckley, skilled workers are building and servicing world-class yachts," Amo said in a statement. "I'm looking forward to bringing what I learn on this tour back to Washington to help inform how to grow these industries, create opportunities for Rhode Islanders, and protect our ocean."

Peter Clark, Hinckley's chief development officer, said in the release that the company is investing in its Portsmouth yard and modernizing it to "attract the next generation of marine trades talent."

Margaret Everett, the university's provost, said the visit included the school's Marine and Natural Sciences building and facilities of its Center for Economic & Environmental Development.

According to Amo's office, Rhode Island's maritime economy directly employs 36,000 people in the state and contributes more than $5 billion a year to the state's gross domestic product.

Amo's office said he began the tour with a visit to REGENT Craft, where he helped cut the ribbon on the company's new electric Seaglider factory. In 2024, he toured his 1st Congressional District to highlight the state's maritime economy, the office said.
