Two men found unresponsive in car at Derby gas station; one cited on cocaine charge

Vermont State Police said a Newport Center man was cited on a cocaine possession charge and a curfew violation, and a second man was jailed on outstanding warrants.

A Newport Center man was cited on charges of cocaine possession and violating a court-ordered curfew after a trooper found him and another man unresponsive in a car at a Derby gas station, Vermont State Police said Friday.

A trooper from the Derby barracks saw a car with two unresponsive people inside at the Mobile gas station on U.S. Route 5 in Derby at about 2:45 a.m. Oct. 1, police said. Both men became responsive when the trooper approached, according to the release.

Police identified the men as Troy Guertin, 42, of Newport Center, and Nicholas Blake, 37, who police said has no fixed address. The trooper saw signs of drug use in the car, police said.

Guertin was under a 24-hour curfew at a home in Newport Center, according to police. Blake was wanted on warrants charging him with retail theft, driving under the influence of drugs and driving with a license suspended for DUI, police said.

Blake was arrested on the warrants and taken to the Northern State Correctional Facility after he could not post $200 bail. He was scheduled to appear Oct. 1 in Orleans County criminal court, police said.

A search of the car turned up a substance believed to be cocaine, police said. Guertin was cited to appear in the same court Dec. 8 on charges of cocaine possession and violating a condition of release.

The charges are allegations, and both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
