Central Falls special education teacher wins $25,000 Milken Educator Award

Briana Jones, who runs Central Falls High School's transition program and a student-run food truck, is the first teacher in the country to receive the award in its 2026-27 cycle, state education officials said.

Briana Jones, a special education teacher at Central Falls High School, received a Milken Educator Award and its unrestricted $25,000 cash prize at a surprise assembly Wednesday, according to the Rhode Island Department of Education. The department said she is the first recipient in the nation for the 2026-27 cycle.

Students, teachers and local officials gathered in the school gymnasium for what they had been told was an assembly with state Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green. Jane Foley, a senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, joined Infante-Green on stage to announce the award.

Jones has taught the school's transition program for students ages 18 to 22 for 15 years and also leads its business entrepreneurship culinary program in career and technical education, the department said. She launched the program's food truck, "The Taste of Central Falls," part of the department's Menu for Success student-run food truck program. That program began in Central Falls and has become a model for similar programs elsewhere in Rhode Island, according to the department, which said Jones opened the truck to general education students as well as special education students.

She also volunteers with Unified Sports and Special Olympics, serves as special education lead at the high school and in the district, and teaches special education classes as an adjunct professor at the University of Rhode Island. She earned her bachelor's degree from Rhode Island College in 2013.

Jones is Rhode Island's 86th recipient since the state joined the program in 1990, its only recipient for the 2026-27 school year and the first ever from the Central Falls School District, the department said.

The awards, given by the Milken Family Foundation, have no applications or nominations. The foundation plans to honor up to 30 educators nationwide in the 2026-27 cycle, and recipients will attend a forum in Washington, D.C., June 4-6, 2027.
