Brattleboro man dies at Springfield prison a day after entering state custody

Vermont State Police said the death of Trevis Gembarowski, 44, at Southern State Correctional Facility does not appear to be suspicious. His cause of death awaits toxicology results.

A 44-year-old Brattleboro man died at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield on Sept. 27, a day after he entered state custody, Vermont State Police said.

Trevis Gembarowski had a medical emergency at about 9:48 a.m. while staff from the Vermont Department of Corrections were with him, according to state police. Staff called for an ambulance and tried to save him. He was pronounced dead at the prison at about 10:19 a.m., police said.

Police said the death does not appear to be suspicious. An autopsy was performed Sept. 28 at the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Burlington. The cause and manner of death will not be determined until toxicology results are back, according to state police.

A detective from the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigations was assigned to the case and went to the prison. Police said this is standard practice when someone dies in Department of Corrections custody.

Gembarowski had been in the department's custody since Sept. 26, police said. The release did not say why he was being held.

State police referred further questions to the Department of Corrections.
