Hampden DA's mentoring program for aspiring Springfield lawyers draws record turnout

The Future Lawyers of Springfield program, run with Western New England University School of Law, opened its 2026-27 season with 46 people at its first meeting, the district attorney's office said.

A mentoring program run by the Hampden District Attorney's Office for Springfield students who hope to become lawyers opened its 2026-27 season with 46 people in attendance, a record turnout for the program, the office said Wednesday.

The Future Lawyers of Springfield program, run in partnership with Western New England University School of Law, aims to identify young students interested in the law and guide them through college and law school and into legal careers, according to the office. It offers mentoring and chances to explore the court system and the practice of law in Western Massachusetts, the office said.

The Oct. 1 orientation opened with remarks from Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni and Zelda B. Harris, dean of the law school. Gulluni described his path through law school and his run for district attorney, then took questions from students.

Asked by one student what skill to sharpen in law school, Gulluni answered resiliency. "You will have hard and bad days, but what matters is how you get up, keep going, and learn from it," he said, according to the office.

Members were then introduced to the program's leaders for the school year: Assistant District Attorneys Sean Buxton, Jeff Clarke, Kiara DeJesus and Nina Signorelli, along with Tony Simmons, the office's community safety and outreach director, and Gina Anselmo, its deputy director.

At the group's next meeting, on Oct. 15, members are scheduled to hear from four panelists who work in different areas of law.
