Environmental police identify Great Barrington climber who died in fall in Kent

Connecticut environmental conservation officers said Collin Salmon, 30, died after falling while rock climbing near the Appalachian Trail at St. John's Ledges.

State environmental police have identified a 30-year-old man who died after falling while rock climbing near the Appalachian Trail in Kent, Conn.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said Friday that the man was Collin Salmon, of Great Barrington, Mass., who previously lived in Warren, Conn.

Officers from the department's Environmental Conservation Police, known as EnCon, and Connecticut State Police were called to the Appalachian Trail on River Road in Kent for a report of a fall, the department said. Salmon was climbing in the area known as St. John's Ledges, near the trail, when he fell, according to the department.

He was taken to New Milford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the department said.

The Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death, according to the department, which said the case is under investigation.

"DEEP extends its condolences to Collin's family and friends," the department said in its statement.
