New Hampshire Fish and Game to hold hearing on bait fish and fishing rule changes
The department plans to re-adopt a set of fishing rules, some with amendments to its bait fish lists and tournament restrictions, and will take public comment through Nov. 18.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department will hold a public hearing Nov. 10 on re-adopting a group of fishing rules, several of them with changes to the lists of fish that may be used or imported as bait, the department said Friday.
The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. at the department's headquarters in Concord.
Under the proposal, the rule on possessing and using live fish for bait would drop two species from its list, add the word "Eastern" before two species names and correct the scientific names of two others. A separate rule on importing fish for bait would also drop two species and correct the common and scientific name of one. The department said the form used for importing bait fish would be changed to match.
Other amendments would state a daily bag limit outright in the rule for lake trout and salmon waters and remove a redundant provision, remove an incorrect cross-reference from the rule on bait hooks, and remove one section of the general restrictions on fishing tournaments while clarifying another.
Several rules would be re-adopted unchanged so they do not expire, including those covering lake whitefish, round whitefish and Free Fishing Day. The department also plans to restore, without changes, rule sections that have already expired, covering river herring, ice fishing and open-water restrictions, and specific rules for the Salmon Falls River, Great East Lake and Umbagog Lake.
The proposed rules are posted on the department's website. Written comments will be accepted by email at [email protected] until Nov. 18, the department said.
