Amo releases 2026 Blue Economy Report after visiting North Providence marine trades program
U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, D-R.I., visited a high school marine trades program and a manufacturing event, then met with maritime industry, labor and education leaders as part of his 2026 Blue Economy Tour.
NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. — U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, D-R.I., released what he calls his 2026 Blue Economy Report on Wednesday after visiting North Providence High School's Marine Trades Program and Polaris MEP's Manufacturing Day, according to his office.
The stops were part of Amo's 2026 Blue Economy Tour, which his office said is meant to highlight the workers, students, researchers and businesses in Rhode Island's maritime economy. After the visits, Amo led a roundtable with environmental, labor, fishery, education and business leaders to discuss the future of the state's maritime industries, his office said.
Amo said the tour was highlighting opportunities to "grow good-paying jobs, strengthen our marine industries, and protect the waters that sustain us." He said he would bring those ideas back to Washington and "keep fighting for the investment and support Rhode Island needs."
Melissa Caffrey, director of pathways for the North Providence School District, said students in the high school's marine trades program study boatbuilding, composites, systems and marine technology, work alongside industry partners and earn credentials.
Matt Watson, center director of Polaris MEP, said the Manufacturing Day program gives students a firsthand look at what a career in modern manufacturing can involve by connecting them with local manufacturers.
Earlier tour stops included REGENT Craft, where Amo helped cut the ribbon on the company's new electric Seaglider factory; Roger Williams University's shellfish farm and research facilities; Hinckley Yachts' Portsmouth facility; and Solid State Power, his office said.
According to Amo's office, Rhode Island's maritime economy directly employs 36,000 people in the state and contributes more than $5 billion a year to the state's gross domestic product. Amo held a similar tour of the 1st Congressional District in 2024.
