MBTA opens accessible walkway to Milton station on the Mattapan Line

The sloped walkway links Adams Street to the Milton trolley stop and adds lighting, security cameras, handrails and seating, the transit agency said.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has opened a new accessible walkway connecting Adams Street to Milton station on the Mattapan Line, the agency said Thursday.

The MBTA held a ribbon cutting for the walkway on Sept. 30. The agency said the walkway meets the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and allows anyone to travel safely between Adams Street and the station.

Along with the walkway, the project added new lighting, security cameras, handrails, signs, seating and landscaping, according to the MBTA. The work is part of the agency's larger Mattapan Line Program.

Sen. William Driscoll Jr. said the new entrance and walkway at the Milton trolley stop are the first visible and major improvement made to the Mattapan Line since the line's refurbished trolleys entered daily service. He said further work planned along the line would bring hundreds of millions of dollars in improvements to service, accessibility and the rider experience, though the release did not give a figure or a timeline.

Rep. Brandy Fluker-Reid said the route is used by neighbors traveling to work, school and appointments.

"A sloped walkway with new lighting, handrails, and security cameras will make this stop easier and safer for seniors, people with disabilities, families with strollers, and everyone else who uses the Mattapan Line and the Neponset Greenway," she said.

Rep. Richard G. Wells Jr. described the project as a "long-awaited improvement" for commuters who use the line.

The MBTA did not say what the walkway cost or how long construction took.
