Pickup and trailer total loss after hydroplaning crash on I-89 in heavy rain

A 52-year-old East Corinth man was not hurt when his pickup and enclosed trailer spun into a guardrail on Interstate 89 southbound, Vermont State Police said.

An East Corinth man escaped injury Tuesday when his pickup truck and the enclosed trailer it was towing spun out of control in heavy rain and hit a guardrail on Interstate 89 southbound, Vermont State Police said.

Troopers from the St. Albans barracks were called at about 2:53 p.m. to a report of a vehicle that had struck a guardrail and an enclosed trailer that had rolled over near mile marker 113.6, police said.

The driver, Ricky Thompson, 52, told troopers the trailer hydroplaned in the rain, sending the truck and trailer into a spin and into the guardrail, according to police. Thompson was wearing a seat belt and was not hurt, police said.

His 2022 Ford F-150 and the 18-foot trailer were both a total loss, according to police. The road was wet at the time of the crash.

The interstate was closed at Exit 19 while the truck and trailer were removed, police said. No charges were listed in the release.

State police urged drivers to slow down in the rain and when passing emergency scenes.
