Wrong-way driver, 88, injured in head-on crash on I-295 in Portland

Maine State Police said a Subaru went the wrong way in the southbound lanes near Tukey's Bridge on Aug. 29 and hit an oncoming car, sending three people to the hospital.

Three people were hurt in a head-on crash on Interstate 295 in Portland after a driver went the wrong way in the southbound lanes, Maine State Police said.

Police said the Bangor Regional Communications Center took a report of a car heading north in the southbound lanes at about 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 29. Moments later, dispatchers in Bangor and Portland began receiving calls about a head-on crash near Tukey's Bridge, close to exit 8.

According to state police, a preliminary investigation found that a 2020 Subaru Outback driven by Ronald Ferguson, 88, of Nelson, New Hampshire, mistakenly entered the southbound lanes and was traveling the wrong way when it struck a 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse heading south.

Ferguson, a woman riding with him and the woman driving the Mitsubishi were all taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Neither passenger nor the other driver was identified.

State police, Portland police and the Portland Fire Department responded. Two of the highway's four lanes were closed for just over two hours, police said.

No charges were announced.
