Rhode Island farms and food sellers to mark second RI Grown Week Oct. 5 to 11

The state Department of Environmental Management said farms, markets and retailers will offer tastings, workshops and seasonal specials during the weeklong promotion of locally grown food.

Farms, markets and food retailers across Rhode Island will offer tastings, workshops, seasonal specials and other events from Oct. 5 to 11 as part of the second annual RI Grown Week, the state Department of Environmental Management said Thursday.

Gov. Dan McKee signed a proclamation for the event, according to the department. "It's important to highlight the value of the local farmers and food businesses that nourish our state," McKee said in a statement.

Events include the weekly farmers markets at Goddard Memorial State Park on Oct. 9 and Fishermen's Memorial State Park on Oct. 11, the department said. Participating farms, retailers and markets will feature locally grown menu items and deals.

Among the participants listed by the department are Blackbird Farm in Smithfield, Butterfly Farm and Chaos Farm in Lincoln, Growing Hope Farm in South Kingstown, Little Compton Flowers, Lucayda Farm and Pippin Orchards in Cranston, Lucky Clover Farm in North Scituate, Ocean State Juice, Riverside Christmas Tree Farm in Charlestown, Sanctuary Herbs of Providence, Urban Greens Food Co-op in Providence, My Tail's Wagging in Richmond and Water Way Lavender Farm in Barrington.

The department said it will highlight farms, markets and food businesses that produce flowers, vegetables, fruit, shellfish, meat and other products during the week. Farms, markets and retailers that want to take part can sign up through a free participation form and receive a promotional toolkit, the department said.

"Our farmers work every day to provide locally grown food statewide, steward our land, and strengthen our local food system," DEM Director Terry Gray said.
