Connecticut health officials urge flu shots as respiratory virus season begins

The state Department of Public Health recommends flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older and launched an animated video series meant to help parents talk with doctors about childhood vaccines.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health on Tuesday urged residents to get a flu vaccine and to talk with their doctors about other shots as the fall and winter respiratory virus season begins.

Flu, COVID-19 and RSV typically spread more widely in the fall and winter, the department said, and state surveillance data from recent seasons show flu activity rising sharply around December. Getting vaccinated in October gives the body about two weeks to build protection before those increases, according to the department.

"Flu vaccine is our strongest protection against severe flu illness, and we recommend it for everyone six months and older," said Public Health Commissioner Dr. Manisha Juthani. She said many states are already seeing marked rises in flu cases and that "Connecticut is not far behind."

The department said its recommendations for the 2026-27 season align with guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. It recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older, and COVID-19 vaccination for children under 2 and people at high risk; everyone else is encouraged to ask their doctor which vaccines are right for them. For RSV, the department recommends protecting infants either through vaccination during pregnancy or with monoclonal antibodies given to babies, and vaccination for people 60 to 74 at high risk and everyone 75 and older who has not had an RSV vaccine before.

The department and the CT Immunization Coalition, working with local health departments and federally qualified health centers, have published a statewide list of flu clinics, including homebound services. Flu vaccine is available to uninsured and underinsured adults through the Connecticut Vaccines for Adults program, the department said.

The department also released "Protect Who Matters Most," a four-part animated video series with original songs, inspired by Schoolhouse Rock, covering life before vaccines, common questions, vaccine safety and approval, and how vaccines work. The videos are also available in Spanish and in sing-along versions.

"Asking questions is not a sign of doubt," Juthani said. "It's how families make good decisions."
