Peruvian man sentenced to 15 months for illegally reentering the U.S. after two deportations

Cesar Ruben Yllescas, 52, was sentenced in federal court in Hartford after pleading guilty in June to unlawful reentry, prosecutors said. He had been deported to Peru in 2016 and again in 2020.

A 52-year-old Peruvian man was sentenced Tuesday to 15 months in prison for illegally returning to the United States after being deported twice, the U.S. attorney's office for the District of Connecticut said.

Cesar Ruben Yllescas was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford, according to U.S. Attorney David X. Sullivan's office. Yllescas pleaded guilty on June 23 to unlawful reentry after removal.

Prosecutors said that between 1995 and 2015, Yllescas was arrested, convicted and sentenced several times in Connecticut Superior Court and in district court in Chicopee, Massachusetts, on charges including narcotics offenses, threatening, assault, failure to appear in court and illegal operation of a car. He was deported to Peru in June 2016, prosecutors said.

He later returned to the country and was convicted in federal court of unlawful reentry, drawing a 10-month prison sentence in December 2019, according to prosecutors. He was deported to Peru again in May 2020.

Yllescas returned once more and was arrested on March 20 by West Springfield, Massachusetts, police on driving-related charges and on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court in 2015 on a probation violation, prosecutors said. After he was released on bond in the state case, Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested him in West Springfield on March 23. He has been held since, prosecutors said.
