Boston breaks ground on 18 affordable ownership homes in Grove Hall
Marzuq Muhammad Plaza II, a four-story mixed-use building on Blue Hill Avenue, will pair 18 income-restricted condominiums with ground-floor retail and community space. The city said construction has begun.
Construction has started on Marzuq Muhammad Plaza II, a four-story mixed-use building on Blue Hill Avenue in Grove Hall that will create 18 affordable homeownership units along with retail and community space, the city of Boston said Wednesday.
City officials, the developer MTK Development and neighborhood residents marked the start of work on the project, according to the Mayor's Office of Housing. The building will include 3,272 square feet of ground-floor retail and community space, one- to three-bedroom homes priced for households earning between 80 and 100 percent of area median income, outdoor green space and parking for up to eight vehicles, including ride-share spaces.
Funding came in part from the Mayor's Office of Housing and the city's Neighborhood Housing Trust, the city said. Other sources include MassHousing's Commonwealth Builder Program and the state Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities.
The development is named for Marzuq Muhammad, a commercial real estate professional and civic leader in Roxbury who died in 2018. The city said he served with the Roxbury Strategic Oversight Committee, the Fairmount Indigo Initiative, the Achieve Program and the Museum of African American History, and founded the Daddy and Me Literacy Program to support fathers of color. He was a member of Masjid Al Quran, where the original Marzuq Muhammad Plaza stands.
"Marzuq Muhammad spent his life building up Grove Hall," said Wadi Muhammad, a principal at MTK Development, who said the second phase is intended to help keep local families in the neighborhood.
