Police search for 22-year-old Reading man after his mother is found shot dead at home

A 49-year-old woman was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound in a Center Avenue home in Reading, and authorities said her 22-year-old son and his car are unaccounted for.

Police are searching for a 22-year-old Reading man after his mother was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound inside the home they shared, authorities said Thursday.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Reading Police Chief David J. Clark said the woman’s death is being investigated as an apparent homicide.

Reading police got a 911 call at about 12:38 a.m. reporting that a woman’s body had been found inside a home on Center Avenue, according to the district attorney’s office. Officers found the 49-year-old with an apparent gunshot wound, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities did not release her name.

Her son, Ryan Hanafin, 22, is unaccounted for, as is the car he owns, the district attorney’s office said. Authorities have not described Hanafin as a suspect.

Police believe Hanafin is driving a black 2010 Dodge Charger with Massachusetts license plate 2PSY15, according to the district attorney’s office. He is about 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Authorities asked anyone who sees Hanafin or the car not to approach and to call 911 immediately.

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Reading police and State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office are investigating.
