Mayor's Cup cross country races return to Franklin Park for 36th year
The Boston Parks and Recreation Department said youth races and an all-comers 5K will be held at Franklin Park on Oct. 25, with pre-registration required.
The 36th annual Mayor's Cup Cross Country races will be held Oct. 25 at Franklin Park, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department said Tuesday.
The event is run by the department with USATF New England and sponsored by the Boston Athletic Association. It is open to runners of all ages, and every race goes over the park's Bear Cage Hill, according to the city.
The program includes youth races for runners 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14, along with the Franklin Park 5K, an all-comers race for men and women combined. Medals go to the top three finishers in each youth division and to the three scoring members of the top three teams in each youth race. Team scoring combines the 8-and-under and 9-10 groups into one race, the department said.
The 5K will have age divisions for runners 15-18, 19-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and older. The overall winners receive the Mayor's Cup award, and the top teams win the Bill Squires Cup.
Squires, a Boston running coach, founded the event in 1990 to bring open cross country racing back to Franklin Park. The first race had nine entrants; the event draws nearly 1,000 participants a year, from youth runners to international-caliber athletes, the city said.
Jack Fleming, president and CEO of the Boston Athletic Association, called Franklin Park "widely considered one of the best cross-country courses in America."
Pre-registration is required for all races and is open through the city's parks website at boston.gov/parks-sports.
