Springfield man, 22, arrested in August killing of 19-year-old woman
Springfield police said Alex Alejandro was arrested Friday in the Aug. 16 shooting death of Reinalyz Caraballo, and is also accused in a separate shooting a week earlier that left a man seriously hurt.
Springfield police arrested a 22-year-old city man Friday in connection with the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old woman in August, the department said.
Alex Alejandro was arrested about 11:15 a.m. Friday on Salem Street by officers from the department's Firearms Investigation Unit and Emergency Services Unit, along with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, police said.
Officers were called to Main Street about 4:15 a.m. on Aug. 16 after a gunshot detection system registered gunfire, according to the department. A woman who had been shot arrived a short time later at Baystate Medical Center, where she died. The Hampden district attorney's office identified her as Reinalyz Caraballo, 19.
Detectives with the department's homicide unit and the district attorney's murder unit identified Alejandro as the suspected shooter and obtained a warrant for his arrest, police said. He is charged with murder, firing a gun within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license and receiving a stolen car.
Police said detectives also identified Alejandro as a suspect in an Aug. 9 shooting on Carew Street, where officers found a man who had been shot about 12:30 a.m. He remains hospitalized with serious injuries, according to the department. Alejandro faces a second warrant in that case charging attempted murder, attempted armed robbery and firearms counts.
The charges are allegations, and Alejandro is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Police said he will be arraigned in Springfield District Court.
