Struggling hiker rescued overnight from Boot Spur Trail on Mount Washington

New Hampshire Fish and Game officers and volunteer rescuers brought a New Jersey man down from the mountain after his companions spent hours trying to help him, the department said.

New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers and volunteer rescuers brought a struggling hiker down from the Boot Spur Trail on Mount Washington in Sargent's Purchase overnight, the department said Monday.

Rescuers were called at about 10 p.m. Sept. 26 to help Nagarajan Tiruchchirapallis, 48, of Jersey City, New Jersey, who had an unknown physical ailment, according to Fish and Game. Volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue joined the officers.

Tiruchchirapallis had set out early that morning with three companions up the Tuckerman Ravine Trail but struggled on the climb, and his companions told him to turn around, the department said. He instead took a shuttle to the summit, where he met the group.

After a break at the top, he decided to hike down with the others, and they started down at 11:30 a.m. According to one of his companions, it took him nearly two hours to cover about half a mile. His companions again told him to return to the summit for a ride down, but he refused and kept going, the department said.

After several 911 calls later in the day and repeated attempts by his companions to get him down, including carrying him on their backs, a rescue crew was called. Rescuers reached him at 12:30 a.m. Sept. 27, helped him down to the Sherburne ski trail and drove him by ATV to the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center, arriving at 2 a.m.

He was evaluated by Gorham Ambulance crews and taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin as a precaution, Fish and Game said.
