Ellington bookkeeper pleads guilty to embezzling more than $750,000 from Hartford law firm

Heather Murdock, 58, admitted forging hundreds of checks and stealing rent payments over 12 years, and to failing to pay taxes on the money, federal prosecutors said. She is due to be sentenced Dec. 1.

An Ellington woman pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court in New Haven to bank fraud and tax evasion in connection with an embezzlement scheme at the Hartford law firm where she worked, federal prosecutors said.

Heather Murdock, 58, worked as the bookkeeper and office manager at the firm, which was not named in court papers, according to the U.S. attorney's office for Connecticut. Prosecutors said that between about 2010 and 2022, Murdock used the firm's bookkeeping software to generate hundreds of false checks payable to herself, forging the signature of the firm's owner, and altered entries in the system to make it appear the checks had gone to legitimate vendors. She deposited the checks into her own bank account and took about $578,279 that way, prosecutors said.

Murdock also stole cash rent paid by tenants of properties owned by the firm's owner, roughly $175,559, and covered it up by writing checks from the firm's account to the owner's rental income account so the expected deposits appeared to have been made, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said Murdock did not pay federal income taxes on the stolen money, underreported her income in 2011 and 2012 and filed no tax returns for 2013 through 2022, leaving $225,991 in unpaid taxes.

She agreed to pay $753,838.70 in restitution to the victim and the back taxes, plus penalties and interest, to the IRS. Bank fraud carries up to 30 years in prison. Murdock is free on a $40,000 bond and is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 1.
