Bradford man accused of shoplifting at Family Dollar, driving on suspended license

Vermont State Police said Travis Merritt, 45, hid merchandise and left without paying for it at the Bradford store, then drove away even though his license was criminally suspended.

BRADFORD, Vt. — A Bradford man has been cited on charges of retail theft and driving with a criminally suspended license after a shoplifting report at the Family Dollar store in Bradford, Vermont State Police said.

Troopers from the St. Johnsbury barracks were called to the store at about 6:12 p.m. on Oct. 24, according to police. After collecting evidence and speaking to witnesses, troopers determined that Travis Merritt, 45, of Bradford, had hidden merchandise and left without paying for it, police said.

Troopers also determined that Merritt's license was criminally suspended and that he had driven away from the store, according to the state police. Troopers later found Merritt and cited him to appear in Orange County Criminal Court.

Police did not say what merchandise was taken or what it was worth. Merritt was not held, according to the release.

He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 23. Police noted that court dates are subject to change.

The charges are allegations, and Merritt is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
