Two men arrested after early-morning shooting in Dorchester, Boston police say

Boston police said officers chased down two men on a scooter and recovered two handguns after a man was shot on Westview Street on Aug. 29. Both men face gun charges and are expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.

Two men were arrested and two handguns recovered after a shooting in Dorchester early on Aug. 29, Boston police said.

Officers with the department's Youth Violence Strike Force were on patrol about 2:55 a.m. when they saw two men on a moped near Blue Hill Avenue and Washington Street run several red lights, according to a police account released Sunday. As officers watched the pair, they heard several gunshots from the area of Westview Street, police said.

Officers found a man there with several gunshot wounds and he was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.

Police said officers caught up with the scooter on Woodrow Avenue, where it hit a police car while turning onto Milton Avenue and became tangled with it. Both riders jumped off and ran, police said. One man threw a .40-caliber Glock 27 onto the roof of a house on Milton Avenue before he was arrested, and officers took a Glock 19 from the waistband of the second man after he fell and struggled with them, according to police.

Police identified the men as Ariel Alexander Baez-Lora, 18, of Hyde Park, and Jamari Owens, 30, of Jamaica Plain. Both face charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and carrying a firearm without a license, and both are expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court, police said. Owens also faces charges of resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license.

The charges are allegations, and both men are presumed innocent unless convicted.
