Wrong-way driver crashes into Vermont State Police cruiser on I-89 in Williston
Taylor Chagnot, 29, of Windham, Conn., faces drunken-driving and eluding charges after driving south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 89, state police said. A passenger was hurt.
A Connecticut driver was arrested early Sunday after driving the wrong way on Interstate 89 and crashing into a Vermont State Police cruiser in Williston, state police said.
Troopers were told of a driver heading south in the northbound lanes near Exit 14 in South Burlington, police said. Troopers found the vehicle, a 2020 Jeep Gladiator, still going the wrong way near Exit 12 in Williston. Despite their efforts to get it to stop safely, the Jeep crashed into a police cruiser, badly damaging it, according to police.
Police identified the driver as Taylor Chagnot, 29, of Windham, Conn. Troopers said they saw signs of impairment while speaking with Chagnot, who was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, grossly negligent driving, attempting to elude police and reckless endangerment.
Chagnot was not hurt, police said. A passenger in the Jeep, Allison Roberts, 31, of Underhill, who was not wearing a seat belt, had minor injuries and was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Police also listed a 2025 Ford Explorer driven by Shawn Cavic, 32, of Williston, as involved in the crash. Cavic had minor injuries, police said. Both vehicles were destroyed.
Chagnot was held at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility for lack of $1,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court in Chittenden County on Oct. 13.
The charges are allegations, and Chagnot is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
