Massachusetts hiker dies on West Rattlesnake Mountain in Holderness

Richard Chateauneuf, 64, of Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, was found unconscious on the trail, and rescuers could not revive him, New Hampshire Fish and Game said.

A 64-year-old Massachusetts man died Oct. 3 after he was found unconscious on a trail on West Rattlesnake Mountain in Holderness, New Hampshire, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

The department identified the hiker as Richard Chateauneuf of Tyngsboro, Massachusetts.

Rescuers were called to the mountain at 11:22 a.m. after he was found, the department said. When first responders reached him, about three-quarters of a mile from the trailhead, other hikers were performing CPR.

Neither the hikers nor the rescuers were able to revive Chateauneuf, Fish and Game said. He was carried to the trailhead.

Conservation officers from Fish and Game responded along with Holderness Fire-Rescue, Center Harbor Fire-Rescue, Sandwich Fire-Rescue and Plymouth Ambulance.

The department, which released details of the death Monday, did not say what caused it.
