New Haven man sentenced to 7 years in federal prison for fentanyl trafficking

Christian Lopez, 42, pleaded guilty in May to distributing fentanyl as part of a New Haven drug operation that federal investigators say was led by Luis Salaman.

A New Haven man was sentenced Wednesday to 84 months, or seven years, in federal prison for trafficking fentanyl, according to the U.S. attorney's office for the District of Connecticut.

Christian Lopez, 42, also known as "Face," was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Stefan R. Underhill in Bridgeport, who also ordered four years of supervised release, prosecutors said.

According to court documents and statements made in court, the FBI's Safe Streets Task Force learned in October 2021 that Luis Salaman, also known as "Bebe," was distributing large quantities of drugs throughout New Haven. Between November 2021 and March 2022, investigators made multiple controlled purchases of fentanyl from Salaman and his associates, including Lopez, prosecutors said.

In December 2021, Lopez was involved in two fentanyl transactions totaling about 300 grams, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

Lopez has been held since his arrest on April 10, 2023. On May 21, he pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute, and distribution of, 40 grams or more of fentanyl, prosecutors said.

Salaman was convicted after a trial and was sentenced March 11 to 14 years in prison, according to the U.S. attorney's office.
