Reed, Northeast lawmakers urge Energy Department to act on heating oil costs

Sen. Jack Reed and more than two dozen lawmakers from northeastern states asked Energy Secretary Chris Wright to back an end to the Iran war and restore energy aid, warning of record heating oil prices.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., and more than two dozen lawmakers from northeastern states have asked the Trump administration to act quickly to lower heating oil costs, which they blamed largely on what Reed's office called President Trump's "reckless war with Iran," according to a release from Reed's office Wednesday.

In a letter to U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the lawmakers urged the Department of Energy to support an immediate end to the war and to put lowering energy costs ahead of the winter. They warned that rising prices would force families to choose between heating their homes and paying for other necessities.

"Heating oil costs for the upcoming winter are projected to reach record levels, and families throughout the northeastern United States will likely bear the brunt of these costs," the lawmakers wrote.

The letter said the closure of the Strait of Hormuz had pushed crude oil from $72 to more than $100 a barrel, and that heating oil had risen to more than $4 a gallon. The lawmakers said households that rely on heating oil are projected to pay about $600 more than last winter. Citing the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources, Reed's office said about a third of Rhode Island households heat with oil.

The lawmakers also criticized the administration for what they said were attempts to eliminate LIHEAP, a $4 billion federal program they said helps families with high energy bills; for eliminating four tax credits and deductions for energy efficiency upgrades; and for cutting more than $20 billion in clean energy and grid modernization funding.

Other signers included Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch of Vermont, and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, along with House members from New England and New York.

The release did not include a response from the Energy Department or the White House.
