Harwinton man charged with reckless driving after motorcycle stop on Route 8 in Watertown

Connecticut State Police say a trooper watched a motorcycle weave through traffic on Route 8 in Watertown before stopping the rider at an off-ramp. Allan V. Vega, 51, faces reckless driving and motorcycle passing charges.

A Harwinton man has been charged with reckless driving after a state trooper reported watching a motorcycle weave through traffic at high speed on Route 8 in Watertown, Connecticut State Police said.

A trooper driving south on Route 8 before Exit 34 saw the motorcycle coming up behind the cruiser at what appeared to be a high rate of speed on Aug. 26 at about 8:43 a.m., according to state police. The rider went past the trooper and then wove in and out of traffic, using both lanes and the right shoulder as he continued south, police said.

The trooper followed at a distance for safety and saw the motorcycle leave the highway at the Exit 34 off-ramp, police said. The trooper found the motorcycle stopped in traffic on Frost Bridge Road, also known as Route 262, and arrested the rider based on the driving the trooper had seen, according to the release.

Police identified the rider as Allan V. Vega, 51, of Harwinton, and said he told the trooper he was running late for work.

Vega was taken to the state police barracks in Litchfield and charged with reckless driving, improper passing within a lane on a motorcycle, operating a motorcycle between lanes and violating the readable license plate requirement, police said. He was released on a $1,000 non-surety bond and was scheduled to be arraigned at Waterbury Superior Court on Sept. 9.

The charges are allegations, and Vega is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
