Mills ends Ireland trade mission in Connemara, region with deep Portland ties

Maine's governor met Irish leaders in Galway and Dublin to discuss trade, education and ocean-economy partnerships, closing the trip in the region that sent a major wave of immigrants to Portland in the 1880s.

GALWAY — Gov. Janet Mills ended a multi-day trade mission to Ireland in Connemara, a region on the country's western Atlantic coast with long ties to Portland, her office said Friday.

In the city of Galway, Mills met with Údarás na Gaeltachta, the regional authority responsible for developing Ireland's Irish-speaking areas. They discussed economic, academic and cultural partnerships building on the links between Maine and Connemara and their ocean economies, according to the governor's office.

A major wave of immigrants from Connemara settled in Portland in the 1880s, working along the city's waterfront and shaping neighborhoods including Munjoy Hill and parts of the West End, the office said. "Former Governor Joe Brennan was the son of Connemara immigrants who spoke Irish on Munjoy Hill," Mills said in a statement.

In Dublin, Mills met with Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Ireland's prime minister, at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Irish American Partnership, a Boston-based charity that raises money for youth programs in Ireland. She attended the dinner as the guest of Irish Senate President Mark Daly and also spoke with former Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, a signer of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

Mills also met with Conor McGuinness, chair of the Irish parliament's fisheries and maritime affairs committee; James Lawless, the minister for higher education, research and innovation; and Agriculture, Food and Marine Minister Timmy Dooley. She opened the trip at Blue Ambition 2026, a conference on the ocean-based economy, where she promoted Maine as a place to invest.

In County Kildare, she toured the Dunmurry Solar Farm, a former golf course converted to solar power by BNRG, which is partnered with Portland-based Dirigo Solar.

"Ireland is the fifth largest investor in the United States," Daly said in a statement.

Mills signed legislation in 2023 creating a trade commission to promote business between Maine and Ireland. Her office said she would return to Maine after the trip.
