Maine names 11 winners in its scallop license lotteries
The Maine Department of Marine Resources drew eight drag license winners and three dive license winners. Entry fees raised $17,850 for scallop research.
The Maine Department of Marine Resources said Friday that 11 people won the state's latest scallop license lotteries. Eight won drag licenses and three won dive licenses.
The drag license winners are Tabor Horton of Blue Hill, Reese Jones of Sedgwick, Aaron Simmons of Bremen, Harrison Rossi of Milbridge, Cody Jodway of Lubec, Scott Moody of Harpswell, Rand Beattie of Birch Harbor and Cole Poland of Bremen.
The dive license winners are Dan Vogel of Orland, David Cale of Machiasport and Jay Joslyn of Harpswell.
According to the department, each winner must apply for a scallop drag apprentice license within 30 days of being notified and then has two full scallop seasons to finish the apprenticeship requirements.
The licenses come from a limited-entry system set up by the Legislature and first put in place by regulation in June 2018. Amendments to the drag lottery approved in August now require winners to complete an apprenticeship before they can apply for a commercial scallop drag license, the department said.
Under the rules, two people win eligibility for a drag license each year for every three license holders who did not renew their drag licenses the previous calendar year.
The department said there were 54 entries for dive licenses and 303 for drag licenses. Fifty dollars of each entry fee goes into the department's Scallop Research Fund, raising $17,850 for scallop research and management.
Winners were drawn at random by InforME, an enterprise created by state law in 1997 to provide access to public information.
