Burlington man charged with eluding police after Newport chase
Vermont State Police said a Burlington man drove off when troopers tried to stop his Jeep for speeding on U.S. Route 5 in Newport, and was arrested after a second, brief pursuit by city police.
A Burlington man was charged with eluding a police officer after he failed to stop for state troopers and was later arrested following a brief chase by Newport police, Vermont State Police said Thursday.
Troopers from the state police barracks in Derby tried to pull over a black 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee at about 8:35 p.m. on Oct. 6 for speeding and lane violations on U.S. Route 5 in Newport, according to the state police. Police said the Jeep was heading south at 51 mph in a 35 mph zone.
The driver did not stop for the cruiser's blue lights and siren, and troopers broke off the attempt, state police said.
Newport police later found the Jeep and identified the driver as Travis Clairmont, 42, of Burlington, according to the release. After a brief pursuit by Newport police, Clairmont was arrested on East Main Street in Newport, state police said.
State police charged Clairmont with eluding a police officer and excessive speed. Newport police filed additional charges, which the state police release did not specify.
Clairmont was held at Northern State Correctional Facility for lack of $1,500 bail and was ordered to appear in Orleans County Superior Court on Oct. 7, police said.
The charges are allegations, and Clairmont is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
