Amo tours Pawtucket battery maker Solid State Power on 'Blue Economy' tour

The Rhode Island congressman said the company's marine battery systems are creating jobs and offering an alternative to fossil fuels, and pledged continued support in Congress.

U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, D-R.I., visited Solid State Power's manufacturing facility in Pawtucket on Wednesday as part of what his office calls his "Blue Economy" tour, a series of stops focused on Rhode Island's maritime industries.

According to Amo's office, the company designs, assembles and ships solid-state battery systems for defense, commercial and recreational marine uses. Amo's office said the visit was meant to highlight the importance of new battery technology to maritime innovation.

"Rhode Island manufacturers, like Solid State Power, are developing cutting-edge battery technology, creating good-paying jobs, and propelling our state's Blue Economy into the future," Amo said in a statement. He said he toured what he described as the company's newly expanded facility and argued that its work was making "maritime battery power a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels." Amo said he would keep supporting the company's work in Congress and push for federal policies to help the industry.

Tom Calef, the company's president and CEO, said advanced energy systems are "quickly becoming critical infrastructure" for the Navy, commercial fleets and autonomous maritime platforms. "We appreciate Congressman Amo's leadership in making sure companies like ours have the support to grow and hire here at home," Calef said.

Amo's office said earlier stops on the tour included REGENT Craft, where he helped cut the ribbon on the company's electric Seaglider factory; Roger Williams University's shellfish farm and research facilities; and Hinckley Yachts' expanded facility in Portsmouth.

According to Amo's office, Rhode Island's maritime economy directly employs 36,000 people and contributes more than $5 billion a year to the state's gross domestic product. Amo held a similar tour of the 1st Congressional District in 2024, his office said.
