Springfield police superintendent recognizes officer who helped mother reach school

Officer Mildalys Nunez carried an infant in a car seat to the entrance of Milton Bradley School while working a construction detail, according to the Springfield Police Department.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence E. Akers publicly recognized Officer Mildalys Nunez on Thursday after she helped a mother with two small children get to Milton Bradley School, the department said.

Nunez was working a construction detail on Maple Street when she saw a young mother with a toddler and an infant trying to reach the school, according to the department. Nunez carried the infant, in a car seat, up to the school's entrance.

Akers learned of the episode in an email from the public safety director at the MassMutual Center, who saw it happen, the department said.

"The officer (Nunez) helped the struggling mom by carrying the infant (in their car seat) up to the school's entrance," the email read in part, according to the department. "She (Officer Nunez) was spot on and greatly assisted the public she serves."

The department did not say when the encounter took place. Akers said Nunez served the public in a way that reflected well on the department.
