Johnson woman charged with drugged driving after Jeep flips on I-91 in Newbury

Vermont State Police said the driver left her lane, crossed into the median and hit a tree near mile marker 105 Saturday morning. One passenger was taken to a New Hampshire hospital with suspected minor injuries.

A Johnson woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs after her SUV went into the median of Interstate 91 in Newbury, hit a tree and flipped onto its side Saturday morning, Vermont State Police said.

Carolyn Lyford, 62, was driving north near mile marker 105 at about 7:34 a.m. when she failed to stay in her lane, troopers from the St. Johnsbury barracks said. Her 2017 Jeep Renegade went into the median, struck a tree and rolled onto its side, according to police. The Jeep was totaled.

Lyford and her two passengers got out of the Jeep on their own, police said. None of the three was wearing a seat belt, according to the release. Lyford and passenger Lucas Molleur, 48, of Walden, were not hurt. A second passenger, Jose Vazuez, 35, was taken to Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H., with what police described as suspected minor injuries.

Troopers said they saw signs of impairment and gave Lyford field sobriety tests. She was then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and negligent operation, police said.

Lyford is due to appear in Orange County criminal court on Dec. 2. The charges are allegations, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
