Randolph man sentenced to eight years in prison on federal drug and gun charges

Jose Mendes, 36, pleaded guilty in July after searches tied to a gang investigation in Brockton and Randolph turned up loaded handguns and fentanyl pills, federal prosecutors said.

A Randolph man was sentenced Monday in federal court in Boston to eight years in prison on drug trafficking and gun charges, the U.S. attorney's office in Massachusetts said.

Jose Mendes, 36, was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy to serve three years of supervised release after his prison term, prosecutors said. Mendes pleaded guilty in July to one count of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances and one count of possessing guns to further a drug trafficking crime. He was charged in February.

The case grew out of a series of arrests aimed at gangs in the Brockton and Randolph areas, according to the U.S. attorney's office. On Dec. 17, 2025, investigators searched homes and stash houses that prosecutors said were linked to the Brockton-based Harvard Street Gang and its Randolph-based affiliates, including Mendes's current and former homes in Randolph.

Investigators found loaded handguns, among them a Glock pistol fitted with a device that converts it to fire automatically and an extended magazine, prosecutors said. They also found more than 100 pressed blue pills containing fentanyl, as well as cocaine and methamphetamine, according to the office.

Searchers also recovered equipment that prosecutors said is commonly used in large-scale drug trafficking, including a kilogram press, a respirator mask, digital scales, plastic bags and bottles of cutting powder.

The investigation was led by the FBI's Boston division and Massachusetts State Police.
